The Giving Back Series: What Can You Contribute?

The holiday season is officially upon us, and whether you’re already cranking the carols or waiting until December to deck the halls, it’s never too soon to get into the giving spirit. This week, we’re kicking off a seasonal blog series on giving back, which will offer a guide for businesses to help support their communities. Let’s get started!

It’s easy to write a check for a non-profit of choice, but this isn’t necessarily the best way for your business to show its community some love. Here are some ideas to get you started on your brainstorming.

Themed

Not sure where to start? Consider your industry. For example, real estate lends itself to helping the homeless, and event planners can pursue helping sponsor community events. Banks can help get people to give blood (for a different kind of bank!), and web developers can contribute to tech education.

Scheduled

Be mindful of your employees’ schedules. Consider project deadlines, holidays, schedule vacations, company events, and daily/weekly routines, so that when you do give a date and time, your employees are more likely to show up and help.

Personal

Reach out to your staff and see what issues matter to them. Many issues affect those around us more than we know. Choosing a cause with a personal touch will also help motivate your team to support the effort and those around them.

Local

No matter your business’s size, it’s important to show appreciation to your neighbors. Look for initiatives that support your community specifically, and witness the benefits of grassroots efforts.
